Barn Owl Series

The beauty of God’s creatures. Barn Owls are common around the world but the term common does not mean they are not beautiful. These small owls like to live in human structures and hunt for rodents where we live. The challenge of painting white is such fun with this subject. White is never white paint. The Barn Owl is one of my favorites.

Title: Stella

Transparent watercolor on 140-lb (300gsm) cold-pressed Arches

12” x 10” (30cm x 25cm)

Some pets have captured my heart in a profound way and so it was with Stella. I found a photo of her that caught the essence of her spirit, and it inspired this painting. I believe an artist's connection to the subject matter is key to creating a successful painting. That connection gives me the fuel to work through the technical difficulties of a piece with joy and purpose. Subjects with lots of white are a fun challenge to paint because conveying the whites requires a wide palette of color. The white background let some of Stella's edges become lost while amplifying the shadows and contours of her body. I used Arches, cold pressed watercolor paper because it's smooth surface allow finer detail work than rougher surfaces. Daniel Smith transparent watercolors are my preferred pigments.
